SMART behaviour

Is someone who has been helping managers improve their ability to manage and improve the performance of their people, I am still surprised that I hear comments from managers abut behaviour which is far from positive.  I am left wondering why it still a problem, when many of the people I meet are very capable at other aspects of their role, particularly analysis of data and decision –making.

Here are some classic comments I hear when delivering management training courses on Performance Management:

Improvement in job performance comes about through the ability of the frontline manager to coach his or her employees to change the way they accomplish tasks related to their jobs. Lean behaviour NASA / LEI

A couple of weeks ago in Toyota conducts model test I took a look at the testing regime that NASA put in place when it tried to discover if anything was wrong with certain Toyota cars (a perceived problem that resulted in the recall of over 10 million cars).

The official report from NASA concluded that there was no technical problem, and so that should be the end of the story.
